20 July 2009: Nominations Call for County Sports Awards

Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin (STW), the County’s Sports Partnership, are calling for people to nominate their local heroes who are currently working or volunteering in sport or physical activity in Shropshire and/or Telford & Wrekin.

Energize STW has just launched the nominations process for the third annual Energize Awards, held in association with Paycare. These awards are a fantastic opportunity for local people and organisations to be recognised and celebrated for their passion, dedication and commitment to sport and physical activity and an Energize Award really can lead to greater things.

Bishops Castle Lawn Tennis Club, winners of the Project of the Year award in 2008 for their Tennis: Stronger Mind and Body project, went on to be short listed in the category of ‘Power of Sport Award’ at the BBC Midlands Sports Awards. Also, following their successes at the Energize Awards, disability cricket ace Shaun Rigby, silver medal-winning paralympian Mickey Bushell and dedicated coach Anne Staples, all from Telford, had their details put forward by Energize STW for npower Disability Sports Awards. All three were short listed in their categories and Mickey Bushell went on to take home the Male Sports Personality of the Year award.

Chris Child, Partnership Manager for Energize STW commented,

"There is some excellent work happening in the County to help people to be more active, regardless of their background or ability, and the Energize Awards are an opportunity to recognise and thank the people who are contributing to this.

Last years awards were a huge success with a number of people and projects receiving well-earned recognition for the work and time that they put in to sport and physical activity in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. If someone reads this and thinks of someone that they know who deserves to be acknowledged for the work they do I would urge them to nominate them for an Energize Award."

The award categories this year are:

Sports Person of the Year

Coach of the Year

Volunteer of the Year

Young Leader of the Year

Club of the Year

Health Improvement Through Physical Activity Award

Project of the Year (or Sport or Physical Activity Project of the Year)

The deadline for nominations is Friday 11th September. You can nominate online or download a copy of the nomination form and criteria from the Energize Awards Evening section of this website. Alternatively you can telephone 01743 255079 or email ann.johnson@shropshire.gov.uk and the details will be sent to you.

The Energize Awards 2009 in association with Paycare will take place on Thursday 22nd October at the Prostar Stadium, home of Shrewsbury Town Football Club.
