How to nominate
Before nominating a person, group or organisation for an award, please read the general criteria and the criteria for the individual category you are nominating them for. All of these criteria are listed further down this page.
Please keep these criteria in mind as you make your nominations as these will be used by the Awards Panel during the short listing process.
Once you have read the criteria, you can nominate in the following ways:

Complete our online nomination form. You will be required to email a photograph of the nominee(s) to us separately - email photos to paula.pugh@shropshire.gov.uk. Receipt of your online nomination will be confirmed by email from Paula Pugh within office hours - if you do not receive confirmation, please contact Paula on 01743 255079.

Download a PDF of the nomination form, print it off, complete it and post it to us. You can either enclose the photograph(s) of the nominee with the form or email them to paula.pugh@shropshire.gov.uk.
General criteria for all awards
- The deadline for making nominations is 4pm on Friday 10th September 2010.
- You must give details and evidence of the criteria elements in your nomination.
- Those making nominations may be contacted by the Awards Panel to obtain further information about the nominee.
- The nomination eligibility criteria period is: 31st August 2009 – 1st September 2010. All nominees should be active in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.
- Nominations can be individuals, clubs, organisations, companies, projects or partnerships depending on the individual award criteria.
- You can make as many nominations in each category as you wish, although please use separate forms.
- All nominations will be assessed by the Awards Panel and a shortlist of three candidates for each award category will be selected.
- The winners for each category will be put forward to regional and national award schemes as appropriate.
- Self nominations are acceptable.
- The panel can only base their decision on the information in the nomination form, so please complete this to the best of your ability.
- The decision of the awards panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Outstanding Contribution to Sport and Physical Activity Award
Please note that 'hard to reach groups' in this context include: women and girls, disabled people, older people, people from black and ethnic minority communities and people on lower incomes.
Coach of the Year
- A qualified coach (paid or unpaid) who has made a significant contribution to others through their coaching.
- Contribution of coach to encourage more people to start, stay or succeed in sport and physical activity.
- Widening access to sport and physical activity through high quality coaching and innovative practices.
- An inspiration and positive role model for participants and their peers.
- Amount of time committed to coaching per week.
- Total number of years they have been coaching.
- Be qualified and committed to continued professional development.
- Has built strong relationships and links with clubs, schools and other community organisations.
- Overall personality, attitude and reliability.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
Volunteer of the Year
This category aims to recognise the wide variety of roles that volunteers perform, such as secretaries, grounds keepers etc. Please nominate unpaid coaches for the Coach of the Year award.
- Nominee has made a positive impact on others through their giving their time for free in sport and physical activity.
- Contribution of volunteer to encourage more people to start, stay or succeed in sport and physical activity.
- Widening access to sport and physical activity through their volunteering.
- An inspiration and positive role model for participants and their peers.
- Has demonstrated considerable commitment to volunteering over a number of years.
- Has built strong relationships and links with clubs, schools and other community organisations.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
Young Volunteer of the Year
- Nominee must be aged 21 years or under on 10th September 2010.
- Demonstrated exceptional leadership skills.
- An inspiration and positive role model for other young people, acting in a responsible and professional manner.
- Has demonstrated a significant contribution to sport in their community, contributing at least 25 hours of volunteer time in during the eligibility period.
- Commitment to improving the standard of their volunteering through sports courses.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
Sports Person of the Year
- Nominee must be aged 18 years or over on 10th September 2010.
- A sports man or woman who has excelled in their chosen sport. Rankings and achievements must be given.
- Have demonstrated considerable commitment.
- Are an inspiration and positive role model to others.
- Have used their achievements and experiences to make a positive impact on their community and /or club.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
NEW CATEGORY Young Sports Person of the Year
- Nominee must be under 18 years of age on 10th September 2010.
- A sports man or woman who has excelled in their chosen sport. Rankings and achievements must be given.
- Have demonstrated considerable commitment.
- Are an inspiration and positive role model to others.
- Have used their achievements and experiences to make a positive impact on their community and /or club.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
Community Club of the Year
- Can demonstrate commitment to the development of the members of their club, including participants, coaches and volunteers.
- Committed to raising standards and have achieved or at least be working towards Clubmark or an equivalent affiliation.
- Has built strong links with schools in order to engage with young people.
- Engages with the local community.
- Developed an effective management structure.
- Has out in place a club infrastructure which will sustain the club in the future.
- Actively encourages participants to start, stay and succeed in sport.
- Has widened access to their sport to include people who do not normally have the opportunity to take part / targeted work at engaging people from hard to reach groups.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
NEW CATEGORY Adult Team of the Year
- Professional or community sports teams (able bodied or disabled) are eligible for nomination in this category.
- The team has displayed excellence in their chosen sport. Details of rankings and achievements must be given.
- Demonstration of dedication and commitment from the team members and those involved in supporting the team (e.g. coaches).
NEW CATEGORY Junior Team of the Year
- Team members are all under 18 on 10th September 2010.
- School or community club sports teams (able bodied or disabled) are eligible for nomination in this category.
- The team has displayed excellence in their chosen sport. Details of rankings and achievements must be given.
- Demonstration of dedication and commitment from the team members and those involved in supporting the team (e.g. coaches).
Innovative Community Project of the Year
- An individual, club, organisation, project or partnership that has made a significant contribution to overcoming barriers in the participation of sport and physical activity.
- Effectiveness at creating new opportunities for more people, particularly hard to reach groups* to start, stay or succeed in sport and physical activity.
- An inspiration and example of best practice for others.
- Evidence of how innovative ideas have been used to promote, develop or enhance participation in sport and physical activity.
- Dedication and commitment from those involved.
- Has built strong community relationships and links.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
NEW CATEGORY Employer of the Year
- Evidence of encouraging their workforce to lead more physically active and healthy lifestyles.
- Demonstrates commitment to helping their workforce be more active (e.g. installing bicycle racks and showers for those who wish to cycle to work).
- Demonstrates at least one of the following:
- Supporting local community sport, for example through sponsorship.
- Encouraging their workforce to volunteer in local community sport settings or at community sport events, and evidence of workforce achievements.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
NEW CATEGORY Active Lifestyles Award
- An individual or group of people who have made a significant improvement to their health by becoming more physically active.
- An inspiration and positive role model to others.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
Outstanding Contribution to Sport and Physical Activity Award
- An individual, club, organisation, project or partnership that has made an exceptional contribution to increasing participation in sport and physical activity in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.
- Achieving against the odds.
- Gone above and beyond the call of duty.
- A role model for others.
- Involvement in sport and physical activity over a number of years.
- Has the X factor - special qualities that set them apart from others.
