New Shropshire Star Youth Sport Supplement
Rising Stars is the new monthly section of the Shropshire Star devoted exclusively to all that is best in youth sport. The supplement will feature and profile those teams or individuals who are excelling in their particular sport.
The key aims of the supplement are:
- To celebrate and raise the profile of sport across the county
- To increase young people’s participation and enjoyment of sport
- Supporting and profiling promising youngsters
- Raising the awareness of the benefits of sport and physical education
- To raise the awareness of disability sport
Each week, thousands of children strive for success on Shropshire’s pitches, greens, wickets and lawns.
The county’s production line of talent has also taken stars on to the international stage, with people like former Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Joe Hart becoming a star of the Premier League.
Shropshire’s sporting clubs are open to all ages. In recent years, young girl footballers from Church Stretton have earned success on the national stage.
The supplement is being produced as a joint venture between the Shropshire Star and Shropshire’s Schools Sports Partnerships, Energize Shropshire Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire Council Leisure Services with the aim of creating a resource of information for future demands for sports information arising from the increased levels of participation in sport and physical activity.
The first issue of Rising Stars was released on Wednesday 17th February 2010. Look out for future issues in the Shropshire Star newspaper or visit their website www.shropshirestar.com/sport/rising-stars-the-best-of-shropshire-youth-sport/ for more information.

Step into Sport
Are you aged between 14 - 19?
Interested in a career in sport?
If so Step into Sport could be the programme for you!
Sport relies on 1.5 million volunteers, officials, coaches, administrators and managers, stressing the importance and need to recruit and develop as many volunteers as possible.
The Step into Sport programme (SiS) focuses on young people aged 14 to 19, giving them opportunities to become involved in sports leadership and volunteering and encouraging them to continue this into later life.
The purpose of the SiS programme is to increase the quantity, quality and diversity of young people engaged in volunteering and leadership, with consequent benefits to schools, clubs, the community and the young people themselves. In essence Step into Sport is a tool which enables schools and community settings to grow young people as leaders and deploy them as active volunteers both within the school and community settings.
Leadership Academies form part of the SiS programme for young people, and are managed by each School Sports Partnership. The academies are designed to provide high quality support and development for young leaders and volunteers that are committed to actively volunteering within their school and/or community settings.
Here are what some of the previous SiS students and teachers have said about the programme:
Rachel - Current SiS Student - Telford
"The club gave me the opportunity to plan and deliver my own coaching sessions. Seeing so many young athletes playing sport is a reward in itself as you have helped that happen"
Amy - Former SiS student - South Shropshire
"The volunteering opportunities made my personal statement stand out from the crowd when I applied to Universities. My confidence has increased massively and I now feel ready to achieve all my goals."
Teacher from Idsall School - Bridgnorth
"SiS helps students bank vital experience which can help open the doors to holiday work and jobs within sports centres."
