ClubMark
What is ClubMark?
In 2002 Sport England launched a cross-sport accreditation for sports clubs with junior sections in recognition of a quality club. The ClubMark scheme is a nationally adopted set of standards that enables clubs to work towards providing better quality sports club provision for children and young people.
Clubmark sets common criteria for clubs to meet in the following categories:
- Child protection
- Coaching and competition
- Sports equity and ethics
- Club management
Once clubs have demonstrated that they can meet the criteria of the scheme they will be awarded Sport England ClubMark Status. In many sports where there is an existing club development scheme, the National Governing Body (NGB) has integrated the ClubMark criteria into their own scheme.
ClubMark has been introduced to:
- Ensure NGBs have core common criteria to ensure good practice runs through all development and accreditation schemes
- To empower parents and carers in choosing a club for their children
- To recognise an accredited club through a common approach
to branding - To provide a focus around which NGBs, Sport England, sportscoach UK, the Child Protection in Sport Unit, County Sports Partnerships, English Federation of Disability Sport, Womens Sports Foundation, Sporting Equals, local authorities and others can come together to support good practice in sports clubs working with children and young people.

NGBs and CSPs Licensed to Award ClubMark
More than 50 National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) and County Sport Partnerships (CSPs) are now licensed to award ClubMark to proven high quality clubs and there are presently more than 6,000 accredited clubs with over another 4,800 actively working towards achieving accreditation.
Knight Kavanagh & Page have produced data on ClubMark clubs corresponding with the financial year April 2009 to March 2010, providing a clear picture of the current ClubMark situation in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.
The current ClubMark Benchmarking document for our area shows:
- The number of ClubMark and working towards clubs in the county;
- geographical maps showing the distribution of ClubMark/working towards clubs; and
- a comparison of our CSP results with those of the rest of the region.

This information will hopefully continue to enable Energize STW and our partners to identify areas of strength as well as potential gaps that need to be filled, implementing measures and resources to effectively target support in the right places.
