London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
The Olympic Games is the world’s biggest peacetime project and a huge logistical operation which will create many business opportunities. For the UK, London 2012 means:
- 10,500 athletes competing at 31 venues across the UK in 26 different sports
- 20,000 media attending
- 500,000 visitors a day to Olympic venues
- Nine million tickets sold
- The Paralympic Games will have 20 sports, 21 competition venues, 4,000 athletes, and 2,300 officials
However, 2012 will come and go - underpinning all of this planning is an opportunity to use the Games as a lasting legacy that will not only benefit local communities but also continue to attract visitors to explore Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin’s rich cultural and historic heritage.
As a result, a structure for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin was developed in January 2006 to encourage engagement and involvement locally through sub regional and regional partnerships which ultimately feeds into the 2012 Nations and Regions Group.
This structure is responsible for co-ordinating the benefits planning process into an overall strategy and delivery plan and is called the STW 2012 Group.
