Active People Survey
What is the Active People Survey All About?
The Active People survey was commissioned by Sport England and is the largest single survey of sport and active recreation ever undertaken. The first set of results were published in December 2006 (Active People Survey 1) and provided statistical information about levels of participation across the country – by geographic area, age group, sex, disabled / non-disabled, ethnicity and socio-economic group.
This includes information on participation across all 354 local authorities in England, available for the very first time. The survey also gives a breakdown of levels of participation in different sports and the proportion of people volunteering to support sport.
The results of Active People 1 showed that people living in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin are amongst the most active in the West Midlands with 21.6% of the adult population aged 16+ taking part regularly in sport and active recreation.
Other headline results for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin revealled that:
- People living in Shrewsbury & Atcham are the most active in the county with 24.2% hitting the recommended target of 30 minutes of sport or active recreation on three days a week.
- 6.2% of the population of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin volunteer in sport and active recreation³, the highest figure across the West Midlands and significantly higher than the national figure of 4.7%.
- People living in North Shropshire are the most generous with their time - 7.1% giving at least one hour a week to help run a sport club or activity.
Although Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin has some of the highest participation and volunteering rates in the region, these results indicate that approximately four out of five people in England are not doing enough exercise which has serious health - and financial - implications for the nation as a whole.
Since the Active People 1 results were released and set the benchmark in October 2006, two more result updates have since been released - Active People 2 in December 2008 and Active People 3 in December 2009. These subsequent survey results show progress made since Active People 1.

Active People Survey 4 Qtr 1 Headlines
The fourth year of the Active People Survey 4, started in mid October 2009 and is running continuously for 12 months until mid October 2010.
The latest set of quarterly results, (Quarter 1) based on data from January 2009 to January 2010, were published on 17 March 2010.
Results from the latest four quarters of the survey (rolling 12 months), January 2009 to January 2010, can be down loaded from the Sport England website. These include overall adult sport participation, and weekly participation rates in Sport England's NGB funded sports.
Results:
During the 12 months up to January 2010 7.00 million adults (aged 16 and over) participated in sport three times a week for 30 minutes at moderate intensity (16.6% of the adult population in England). This is an increase of 186,000 adult participants (Not Statistically Significant) from 2007/08 when 6.815 million adults (aged 16 and over) participated in sport three times a week for 30 minutes at moderate intensity (16.4%).
This indicates further progress has been made since the increase (Statistically Significant) observed between Active People Survey 1 (2005/6) and Active People Survey 2 (2006/07). In 2005/06, 6.295 million adults (aged 16 and over) participated in sport three times a week for 30 minutes at moderate intensity.
Shropshire has seen no change to the APS3 results for Adult participation in 30 minutes, moderate intensity sport - it remains at 16.1% which is in line with the National figure of 16.6%
Telford & Wrekin have reduced from 13.9% down to 13.2% although this is not a statistically significant change and is still higher than the 11.2% in APS2. The West Midlands figure is 15.2% again with no change.
